Investing in Energy Efficiency

We burn natural gas and oil to produce over one quarter of Singapore’s electricity. Our long-term investment strategy is to improve the efficiency of our power generation, and thus reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Tuas Power Station has seen the installation of four 367.5 MW natural gas-fired combined cycle plants followed by a fifth to replace a Steam Plant. This provides an increase in efficiency of around 30% . Meanwhile the Tembusu Multi-utilities Complex (TMUC) uses Biomass Clean Coal (BMCC) cogeneration and Circulating Fluidised Bed (CFB) Boiler technology which yields a remarkable 70% efficiency rating.

In addition, we offer trigeneration – efficient power, heating and cooling – to major customers via our subsidiary TPGS Green Energy. TPGS has developed a 5 MW trigeneration plant for Pfizer Asia Pacific Pte Ltd with a fuel conversion efficiency of almost 80%, so reducing its annual utility costs and cutting its carbon dioxide emissions by over 20%.
