Playing A Role In Community Development

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, Tuas Power launched its inaugural community project
through the adoption of the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS). From May
to December 2005, Tuas Power implemented a series of activities aimed at encouraging charity and
volunteering among our employees.
MINDS members and their minders were invited to our Family Day in May 2005 to participate in a special
telematch followed by a trip to the Sentosa Underwater World. Our employees also conducted a "Decorate a
Cookie" Workshop for about 120 MINDS students at the Annual Camp for the Intellectually Disabled In June 2005.
To further raise the awareness of staff about MINDS and the services provided for the intellectually disabled,
a MINDS Day was conducted at Tuas Power Station in August 2005. Besides sharing with employees the plight of
the intellectually disabled community in Singapore, MINDS Day also acted as
a platform for fund raising and
volunteer recruitment. Some of MINDS’ services for its clients were showcased at the memorable event.
Tuas Power also encouraged the participation from our business and associates through a first ever Charity
Golf in September 2005. More than $80,000 were raised from the event for MINDS. In December 2005, two special
art pieces commissioned by Tuas Power were auctioned off at our Annual Dinner and Dance.
The highlight of the community project was a Social Enterprise Business Plan Development Competition. A
collaboration with Temasek Polytechnic, the competition invited proposals from some of the polytechnic’s students
for a feasible and sustainable business plan that can be adopted by MINDS as a social enterprise. The main criteria
for all entries in the competition were self-sustainability and the opportunity to provide employment for the
intellectually disabled. At the end of the competition, the winning team was awarded a $2,000 cash prize at a
ceremony to officially hand over the business plan to MINDS for implementation. Tuas Power also donated to MINDS a
total of $100,000 of which $50,000 was to be allocated for the development of the social enterprise.
