Safety

In 2005, Tuas Power was awarded the international OHSAS 18001:1999 accreditation in recognition of our efforts in maintaining a safety and healthy work environment for our employees at the power station.

We take a systematic approach towards health and safety management by actively nurturing the behaviour-based safety culture within the Company, because the best standards and systems are only effective if people comply with them and act safely.

Behaviour-based safety involves a process that focuses on three elements, namely, personal responsibility, individual consequences and proactive interventions. Key to the success of this is employees’ willingness to uphold safety practices. We constantly review and enhance our safety practices and procedures to encourage our employees to be accountable for their own safety as well as that of the people around them. The promotion of behaviour-based safety is also extended to our partners such as suppliers, contractors and the Union. We have been enhancing our behaviour-based safety culture at the power station through several initiatives. These include an annual Health and Safety Week to increase general safety awareness among all stakeholders, including contractors, suppliers, partners and associates who work with our employees on site, daily “toolbox meetings” at the start of each work day and bi-monthly meetings to share safety information and resolve common safety matters.

A comprehensive review of the hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRA) of all work processes and activities was carried out at Tuas Power Station in 2008. A Hazard Operability Study (HAZOP) was also conducted on a new gas compressor that was installed at the Fuel Gas Receiving Station to systematically identify and eliminate potential hazards.
